La Gerla Brunello di Montalcino 'La Pieve' 2019

There are certainly more expensive Brunellos. Few, in my opinion, offer this much pleasure for the money.

I've always had a soft spot for Brunello, and La Gerla's La Pieve perfectly captures everything I love about the region. I first tasted it work in 2025 and then again at the London Wine Fair in 2026, where it stood out amongst some very impressive company. Having also got to know the UK team behind the wines, it's become a bottle I recommend with complete confidence.

As La Gerla's flagship Brunello, La Pieve takes everything I look for in Sangiovese to another level. Layers of black cherry, wild berries and sweet spice are complemented by silky tannins, savoury complexity and remarkable freshness. Rich, elegant and beautifully composed, it's a wine that's already captivating today but has the structure to reward many more years in the cellar.

For those looking to step up from an everyday Brunello without venturing into the region's highest prices, this is one of the bottles I'd reach for every time.
