Jordan Estate Assyrtiko 2025
One of the joys of travelling is discovering the unexpected.
Our visit to Jordan Wine Estate was one of the highlights of my time in South Africa. Owners Gary and Kathy Jordan arranged a wonderful tour of the estate, taking us out through the vineyards in an open safari vehicle and stopping along the way to taste wines overlooking the spectacular Stellenbosch landscape. It was enormous fun, but the wine that surprised me most was their Assyrtiko.
Made from South Africa's first Assyrtiko plantings, the wine proves just how well this Greek variety has adapted to Stellenbosch's climate. Crisp citrus, green stone fruit and a distinctive saline minerality make it wonderfully refreshing, while its vibrant acidity gives it real energy and length.
It's a bottle that reminds me to keep an open mind - sometimes the wines you least expect become the ones you remember most.
